the yimmy test

Unsure of a decision? Try this simple exercise. It takes 3 minutes and applies to everything.

the Yimmy Test

Picture this:

It’s a beautiful sunny day in Los Feliz. I’m at an outdoor table ordering breakfast with one of my best friends, Yimmy. He’s a 6’4”, very kind Australian. I look up and see him holding the menu, eyes closed, smacking his lips together.

“Sir, are you good?”

He doesn’t move.

“I’ve been doing this thing where I close my eyes and try to imagine tasting my food options before I order. More often than not, it completely changes what I order because I’m ordering from habit, not based on what would actually make me happy.”

I always order two eggs and sausage, but to humor him, I try it. I close my eyes and try to imagine putting a forkful of scrambled egg in my mouth, and lo and behold, I am repulsed. I was ordering the same thing I’d gotten since I was a kid, on autopilot. Huevos Rancheros, however, sounds delicious. My mind is blown.

My friend quickly moved on from visualizing his burritos, but I started Yimmy testing every decision I made - “Do I want to leave the house tonight?” “Do I like this shirt?” “Do I feel good in this room?” I discovered just how often I made decisions that weren’t aligned with the person I had become, and it gave me a framework to show up more honestly for myself.

Give it a try. See what old habits you’ve been carrying around.

Wildfire recovery involves so many left-brained decisions, we can choose things we don’t even want because we’re simply tired of choices.

Next time you encounter a decision…Yimmy test it.
